Transformation within the mind and body is part of filmmaker David Cronenberg’s storytelling obsessions, and he returns to that fertile landscape with Crimes of the Future. The trailer has just debuted, and if you are a fan of the most celebrated body horror filmmaker around, please take a look below!
Celebrated performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) and his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) deliver their share of avant-garde performances that showcause the “metamorphosis of his organs).
National Organ Registry investigator Timlin (Kristen Stewart) is tracking their every movement, and the pair’s secrets and motivations may shed light on “the next phase of human evolution.”
This is Cronenberg’s first feature since 2014’s Map to the Stars, and he previously worked with Mortensen in A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.
Find Your Film co-host Bruce Purkey is a fan of Cronenberg’s work, and The Brood showed up for one of his recommendations on an FYF episode from long ago (Purkey’s fav from Cronenberg is The Fly). I interviewed him way back when for eXistenZ, and he was a very genial and insightful interviewee (I’ve always been a fan). Eric Holmes’ favorite Cronenberg flicks were the aforementioned A History of Violence and Easern Promises.
During the Maps to the Stars interviews, Cronenberg talks about his consistent creative process from film to film:
What are some of your favorite Cronenberg movies? Will you be watching Crimes of the Future when it hits theaters on June 3?
The trailer is a definite must watch if you can stomach Cronenberg’s body horror aesthetic (there is one point where Seydoux is ready to place her lips on a surgically opened stomach!). Plus, Kristen Stewart utters a line I’ll never forget (“surgery is the new sex”).
Feel free to comment and share your thoughts on the trailer!!
