CinemAddicts Reviews: ‘First Shift,’ ‘City of Dreams,’ ‘The Wasp,’ ‘Slingshot’

On CinemAddicts Episode 257, we cover movies that are coming out Friday, August 30th, 2024. The featured films are the buddy cop feature “First Shift,” the sci-fi tale “Slingshot,” immigrant drama “City of Dreams,” and the pinpoint thriller “The Wasp.”

“Slingshot” – Bleecker Street

The sci-fi/psychological thriller “Slingshot” centers on a trio of astronauts (Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, Tomer Capone) who are on a mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. The trek untimately gets compromised, leading to tension among the astronauts. The picture, penned by R. Scott Adams and Nathan Parker, was directed by “1408” filmmaker Mikael HÃ¥fström. Feature hits theaters August 30th. Check out Eric Holmes’ interview with director Mikael HÃ¥fström:

Eric Holmes recommends “Slingshot” but Bruce Purkey and I thought otherwise. Listen to our “Slingshot” review on Apple Podcasts:

“City of Dreams” – Roadside Attractions

“City of Dreams” centers on Jesús (Ari Lopez), a young Mexican boy who thinks he is leaving his home to pursue his soccer dreams only to find out he is being trafficked. Forced to work at a downtown Los Angeles sweatshop, Jesús is trying his best to survive through this nightmarish ordeal. Jason Patric co-stars as a police officer who is understandably concerned about Jesús’ safety, and Renata Vaca plays a co-worker in the sweatshop.

I thoroughly was immersed with “City of Dreams” and recommend the feature. Bruce had an entirely different opinion. Check out our review on CinemAddicts:

“First Shift” Poster – Quiver Distribution

Eric Holmes and I absolutely love director Uwe Boll’s latest movie “First Shift.” Penned by Boll, the narrative centers on Mike (Gino Anthony Pesi), an NYPD veteran who shows the ropes to his rooke partner Angela (Kristen Renton). Boll brings his singular take to the cop drama genre, and if you love his previous work (“Postal,” “Assault on Wall Street”), then “First Shift” should be in your wheelhouse.

“The Wasp” – Shout! Studios

Another movie that was roundly recommended by the CinemAddicts crew is “The Wasp” from Shout! Studios. Directed by Guillem Morales, “The Wasp” centers on Heather (Naomie Harris) and Carla (Natalie Dormer), estranged friends who become involved in a murderous plot to kill Heather’s husband (Dominic Allburn). Featuring first rate performances from Harris and Dormer, “The Wasp” is not your typical escapist thriller. Instead, it’s more of an exposition laden confrontation between the women. If you are a fan of either or both actresses, then “The Wasp” should be on your must see list.

The Wasp” hits theaters August 30th. Check out our review on CinemAddicts:
