On CinemAddicts Episode 258, we review movies that were released on September 6, 2024. They are “Red Rooms,” “Continue,” “The Goldman Case,” and “Don’t Turn Out The Lights.” “Red Rooms” is one of my favorite films of the year, “The Goldman Case” is a courtroom drama that Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes dug, and “Continue” is a mental health drama that is inspired by filmmaker Nadine Crocker’s life. Bruce and I have different opinions on Andy Fickman’s horror feature “Don’t Turn Out The Lights.” Listen to our episode for more information!

Red Rooms – Utopia/Nemesis Films

“Red Rooms” centers on Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy), a model who wakes up each morning to attent the trial of alleged serial killer Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos). At the trial she befriends Clementine (Laurie Babin), a woman who believes Chevalier is innocent. Directed and written by Montreal filmmaker Pascal Plante, “Red Rooms” is a slow burn thriller that fires on all cylinders. Gariépy delivers an awards worthy performance as the enigmatic model whose intentions for Chevalier are deeply layered. Babin is also a standout as the naive girl whose own reasons for the trail may differ from Kelly-Anne’s. The third act, where Kelly-Anne faces a seemingly insurmountable chalenge, is simply riveting. “Red Rooms” is now playing in select theaters.

The Goldman Case – Menemsha Films/Moonshaker

Now playing at New York’s IFC Center, “The Goldman Case” is a courtroom drama based on the 1976 trial of Jewish activist Pierre Goldman (Arieh Worthalter). Cédric Kahn wrote and directed this acclailmed French film and Worthalter won a César Award for Best Actor. “The Goldman Case” will also play at Film at Lincoln Center and Los Angeles (Laemmle Royal and Encino Town Center) on September 13.

Continue – Lionsgate

Written, directed, and starring Nadine Crocker, “Continue” centers on the mental health journey of Dean (Crocker) a young woman who is trying her best to “continue” moving forward. Shiloh Fernandez, Emilyl Deschanel, and Lio Tipton play some of Dean’s closes confidantes who try to help her on a productive path. “Continue” is now in theaters and available On Digital and On Demand. “Don’t Turn Out The Lights” – Quiver Distribution

Directed and written by Andy Fickman, “Don’t Turn Out The Lights” centers on a group of college kids who travel in an RV to attend a musical festival. Their weekend plans turn nightmarish after they are stranded on a remote road and are faced with a supernatural entity. The ensemble includes Bella DeLong, Amber Janea, Ana Luz Zambrana, and John Bucy. As a fan of Fickman’s movies, I also enjoyed watching his latest movie. That said, the 109 minute runtime was a bit too long for me, but ultimately I gave the movie a mild recommendation. Bruce Purkey had an entirely different opinion and he basically panned the feature.

“Don’t Turn Out The Lights” is now playing in theaters. Check out our review:
