On CinemAddicts Episode 256, we cover movies that are coming out Friday August 23rd, 2024. The featured films are the Heather Graham Westerner “Place of Bones,” the Belgium noir “The Other Laurens,” the acclaimed documentary “Sugarcane,” and the dramedy “Between The Temples.” For more info and reviews of these films, check out our post!!
Heather Graham stars as Pandora, a widow raising her teenage daughter (Brielle Robillard) at a remote ranch in “Place of Bones.” Calhoun (Corin Nemec) is a wounded outlaw whose appearance at their property puts their respective lives in danger. Tom Hopper is the ringleader of the several cutthroats who are following Calhoun’s bloody trail. Both Eric Holmes and I love “Place of Bones,” a Western that hits theaters and Digital on August 23rd via The Avenue. Check out our YouTube review or our entire podcast below:
“Between The Temples” centers on Ben (Jason Schwartzman), a cantor who has lost his singing voice and is having a crisis of faith. Ben’s late wife died in a tragic accident, and his withdrawal from humanity is highly understandable. Carol Kane is Carla, Ben’s grade school music teacher who requests to be his Bat Mitzvah student. Directed and co-written by Nathan Silver (co-writer is C. Mason Wells), “Between The Temples” is one of my favorite films of 2024. It’s a frenetic, sarcastic, and ultimately deeply felt comedy that really resonated with me. The feature is currently at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Both Schwartzman and Kane also deliver strong and awards worthy performances. I really hope “Between The Temples” gets the attention it deserves.
Directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, “Sugarcane” centers on the investigation of unmarked graves discovered at an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church. Bruce Purkey and Eric Holmes had opposite takes on the documentary. Bruce Purkey gave it 4/5 stars and recommends “Sugarcane,” but Eric Holmes gave it just 1.5/5 stars. Sugarcane has received a ton of critical acclaim and currently it rests at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I gave “The Other Laurens” a 3.5/5 on CinemAddicts, but to be honest the movie is continue to grow on me. This Belgian detective noir centers on Gabriel Laurens (Olivier Rabourdin), a bitter private investigator who has a fateful encounter with his niece Jade (Louise Leroy). Jade tells him that his estranged twin brother died under mysterious circumstance and she needs his help. The feature co-stars Kate Moran as Shelby (Kate Moran), Jade’s criminally minded stepmother. Director and writer Claude Smhmitz (co-writer is Kostia Testut) infuses his noir with a ton of existentialism and biting humor. There is a surprising level of resonance as well with “The Other Laurens,” and both Rabourdin and Leroy deliver exceptional work.
Currently, the movie has a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
