Breathe centers on an East Flatbush mom and daughter (Jennifer Hudson, Quvenzhané Wallis) who are attempting to survive in a world sans oxygen. Filmmaker Stefon Bristol talked to CinemAddicts about working on Breathe and he also elaborated on the diverse set of actors that populated the project.
Breathe’s screenplay was penned by Doug Simon (Demonic, Brotherhood). “I loved the world building and the tension and the constant not knowing what the hell is going to happen to these characters,” said Stefon Bristol. “I love that kind of storytelling and I had to do that script.”
Bristol then reached out to the producers and pitched his vision of Breathe. Initially the feature was going to be set in an Upstate New York farm. “I wanted to have it in Brooklyn with a black family,” said Bristol. “They said ‘great’ and we had to figure out how to elevate the script a little bit.” The theme of protecting one’s children was important to the filmmaker, and that was the key for enhancing the script before shooting the movie.
The movie’s ensemble includes Jennifer Hudson, Quvenzhané Wallis, Sam Worthington, and Common.
