FYF 148: ‘The First Step,’ ‘Linoleum,’ Colin West, Brandon Kramer, Lance Kramer

For the weekend of February 24, Find Your Film co-host Eric Holmes has a couple of great movies for you to see. You can learn more about them thanks to his interviews with The First Step filmmakers Brandon and Lance Kramer. Rounding out the episode is Holmes’ chat with Linoleum writer/director Colin West. Eric and co-host Bruce Purkey both recommend these pictures. Check out the interviews below!

Filmmakers Brandon Kramer and Lance Kramer spent two years editing The First Step. They had over 400 hours of footage to work with to craft their documentary. The project center on Van Jones’ attempt to bridge the political divide in order to pass a “landmark criminal justice bill on prison reform.” To find out if this documentary is playing in your citiy, go to The First Step’s official website.

Los Angeles residents can check out The First Step this weekend at the Laemmle Royal. Brandon Kramer and Lance Kramer will participate in post Q&A session on the February 24 and 26 screenings of the film (executive producer Jana Carter will attend the Feb. 26 showing). On Saturday, Feb 24, the post screening will have the filmmakers joined by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Virgie Walker of People Coordinated Services of Southern California, Tylo James and Pete White of the Los Angeles Community Action Network.

Written and directed by Colin West, Linoleum centers on a Children’s TV show host named Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan). Cameron has always had dreams of becoming an astronaut, and after witnessing a car falling from the sky, he gets motivated to do something about it. His plans on building a dream rocket may seem impractical, but Cameron is determined to see it through. The ensemble includes Rhea Seehorn, who plays Cameron’s wife, and Katelyn Nacon stars as their daughter.

This movie is getting a ton of great reviews (both come highly recommended from Eric Holmes and Bruce Purkey). Interview with Colin West starts at 23:15:
