Arguably Akira Kurosawa’s most celebrated epic, “Seven Samurai” (Shichinin no samurai) celebrates its 70th Anniversary 4K Restoration July 5 at New York’s Film Forum and July 12 at Los Angeles’ Laemmle Royal. The three hour feature, starring Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura, was released in 1954.
“Seven Samurai” centers on a group of warriors, many of whom have fallen from grace or are past their prime, banding together to protect a village from bandits.
The movie was remade into the 1960 John Sturges directed Western “The Magnificent Seven,” a film that featured Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn. In 2016, Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt gave it a go with director Antoine Fuqua’s take on “The Magnificent Seven.”
