CinemAddicts Episode 263 features four movies that are coming out on Friday, October 11. We review the first rate action thriller “Dominique,” the documentery “The Last of The Sea Women,” a thriller called “Daddy’s Head,” and the unexpected folk horror “Falling Stars.” Co-host Eric Holmes recommends all of these movies, I loved all three film that I watched, and Bruce Purkey panned one of the movies. Listen to our episode below!!
In theaters, Digital and On Demand October 11, “Dominique” centers on the titular assassin (Oksana Orlan) as she takes on corrupt police officers and a drug cartel! When her plane is shot down over a South American country (the movie was shot in Colombia), Dominique finds shelter with a family. The ensemble includes Jose Conejo Martin and Maurice Compte.
Having killed the men who tried to loot the plane, Dominique is in trouble with the criminals and officers in the small town. Directed by Michael S. Ojeda, the movie has a ton of action and an entirely unexpected third act. Eric and I absolutely love this movie and gave it high marks. That said, I truly don’t understand the reasoning behind his 4.5/5 rating for “Dominique” (I gave it five stars). For further clarification, listen to CinemAddicts:
Check out my interview with Oksana Orlan:
“Daddy’s Head centers on the uneasy relationship between a boy named Isaac (Rupert Turnbull) and his stepmother Laura (Julia Brown). Isaac’s late father is only the real connection between the two, and chances of them bonding are slim. Horrific complications arise when a creature resembing the father enters their lives!!
Though Eric Holmes found some merit with “Daddy’s Head” (he gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️), Bruce went the other way and gave it 2/5. This type of film should be right up my alley, so I will give it a shot when time permits. Catch “Daddy’s Head” on Shudder starting October 11!
Listen to Bruce and Eric’s review on CinemAddicts:
“The Last of the Sea Women” is a terrific and immersive documentary about haenyo divers in South Korea’s Jeju Island. Directed by Sue Kim, the project focuses on the lives of several of the haenyeos as they discuss their passion for the job. Most of these women are elderly, and there are two younger haenyos in Geoje Island whose lives are also spotlighted. It’s a very evocative and informative documentary on a little known community outside South Korea, and I gave the feature 4.5./5. Bruce Purkey didn’t love it as much as I did, but he still recomments “The Last of the Sea Women” with a 3/5 rating.
Catch “The Last of the Sea Women” on Apple TV+ starting October 11. Listen to my review on CinemAddicts:
“Falling Stars” centers on three brothers (Rene Leech, Shaun Duke Jr., Andrew Gabriel) who venture out into the desert to uncover a buried witch. Their friend reportedly killed the witch, and in this case curiosity killed the cat! The feature debut of director/producer partners Richard Karpala and Gabriel Bienczycki, “Falling Stars” makes the most out of a presumably low budget. The filmmakers have a beautiful feel for visual composition and pacing, making the feature an immersive and, at times, unnerving experience.
The movie’s moniker is a reference to witches who look like falling stars when they descend from the sky to presumably prey on humans! I gave the feature 4/5 stars, and Eric Holmes delivers another confounding review. He joked that he had no idea if this was the worst or best movie he saw this week, which personally I don’t understand. In sum, he highly praised “Falling Stars,” a feature that you hits VOD on October 11. Bruce Purkey tried watching “Falling Stars,” but he could not finish the movie (the feature was simply not to his liking). Listen to Eric and I review “Falling Stars” on CinemAddicts:
