Set in 1940s Australia, “The New Boy” centers on Sister Eileen (Cate Blanchett), a nun who runs a monastery for aboriginal children. When a “new boy” (Aswan Reid) enters her care, Sister Eileen discovers that he may have mysterious powers. Taking care of the boy, whose beliefs conflicts with the Christian mission’s directives, leads to a huge conflict for the nun. CinemAddicts co-host Eric Holmes reviewed “The New Boy” which hits theaters May 23rd.

Warwick Thornton, the filmmaker behind the highly underrated and gripping “Sweet Country,” wrote and directed “The New Boy.” Being a “Sweet Country” fan, I give “The New Boy” a shot.

Although Eric Holmes slightly recommends the movie, he was not too thrilled with the movie’s trim 96 minute running time. “ I’ll give it three stars just because I really enjoyed the ending,” said Holmes, who basically only appreciated the final act, in his review. “But the end is all this movie has, it’s like everything leading up to it almost makes the rest of the movie worth it. This should have been a half hour short. It would’ve been an excellent half hour short.”
